WHAT IS "MEDICAL ASSISTANCE"?
Medical assistance is defined as help which you may receive from the CPAS when paying for medical services.
You can always turn to the CPAS for assistance if you require medical attention but are unable to pay. The CPAS will perform checks to determine whether you are eligible for medical assistance. If so, you will not receive money from the CPAS; the CPAS will bear the costs of your medical expenses.
If you are a foreign individual residing in Belgium illegally and do not have the requisite financial resources to cover your medical expenditure, you will only be eligible for emergency medical assistance.
Emergency medical assistance is solely medical in nature and may be both curative (treatment of a condition) and preventative (to avoid further complications).
NB A healthcare provider must draw up a certificate attesting to your eligibility if you wish to apply for emergency medical assistance.
